Covid-19 Impact on Media & Entertainment and Future Media Careers

Faculty of Journalism & Mass Communication, Pacific University organized a webinar on 11th June, 2020. During this pandemic situation, topic was chosen wisely and very much interesting for the participants. The topic was “COVID Impact on Media & Entertainment and Future Media Careers.

The key-speaker of the webinar was renowned academician Prof. Ujjawal K Chowdhury, Pro Vice Chancellor, Adamas University Kolkata. Dr. Anurag Mehta, Principal, Pacific Institute of Business Studies, Pacific University, Udaipur joined as an expert in the webinar.

The webinar started with welcome note. Dr. Anurag Mehta welcomed all the participants and gave brief introduction of the media industry. During lockdown period the viewership of television increased by 7% and the television viewership of kids registered significant growth of 33%. The uses of Whatsapp increased by 37% and Facebook by 40%. Both electronic and digital media accelerated during lockdown period. Though the cinema witnessed steep decline as production stopped and all 9000 cinema screens were shutdown.

Key note speaker Prof. Ujjwal K Choudhury explained about different media channels and their dynamic functioning in the country. He said in this pandemic situation we need to be aware about fake news which is spreading on the social media speedily.

Prof. Chowdhary further said, there will be a new consumer experiences in times of restricted social interactions. With niche market segmentation different customers’ need can be catered and volume of business can be increased. Cinema will see more releases on Amazon Prime, Netflix etc. By enhancing our digital habits to change education, health, legal and entertainment services are the only solution to get out this pandemic. He also answered to all the queries raised by the participants. He advised all new talents not to worry and give continuous efforts towards work with safety and innovation.

Media expert Assistant Professor Rahul Darji expressed that Youtubers will find more opportunities to progress and prosper due to strict following of social distancing. Technology based low budget news channels and e-newspapers will also flourish in COVID scenario.
